UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer will defeat Republican Nancy Sliwa by a significant amount to become the Upper West Side's next City Council representative, according to NY1 and The New York Times.
With 71 percent of precincts reporting as of 10:50 p.m., Brewer leads 87 percent to Sliwa's 13 percent, according to NY1.
The total vote tally stands at:
Brewer is returning to her old stomping grounds. She represented the Upper West Side in the City Council for 12 years, from 2002 through 2013.
Brewer tweeted out a simple "Thank you" on Tuesday night.

The two candidates ran to replace Helen Rosenthal, who is term-limited.
Brewer got her name on the ballot by beating out five other candidates in the Democratic primary for the district in June.
Sliwa is an Upper West Side resident who serves as the Director of Animal Protection for the Guardian Angeles. She is the wife of Republican mayoral candidate and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa.
Sliwa accompanied her husband to vote on the Upper West Side Tuesday morning, but ran into slight trouble when they attempted to bring one of their 15 cats into the polling site.
The pair was eventually allowed to vote after giving their cat Gizmo to a staffer to hold outside the building.
Brewer spent Election Day visiting multiple polling sites throughout the borough.
For the first time in 20 years, all the winners of Tuesday's Council races will serve only a two-year term, opposed to the usual four years.
The shortened term is due to a rarely discussed provision in New York City's charter that changes the term length in the City Council every 20 years to allow new challengers under new parties. It means there will be another City Council election in 2023.
